NCW Reads with Ana Maria Spagna

4:30 PM - 5:30 PM
Wenatchee Library
Auditorium
Join us for a conversation with Stehekin-based author, Ana Maria Spagna to share about her latest book Pushed: Miners, a Merchant, and (Maybe) a Massacre.

Amid the current alarming rise in xenophobia, Ana Maria Spagna stumbled upon a story: one
day in 1875, according to lore, on a high bluff over the Columbia River, a group of local Indigenous people murdered a large number of Chinese miners--perhaps as many as three hundred--and pushed their bodies over a cliff into the river. The little-known incident was dubbed the Chelan Falls Massacre. Despite having lived in the area for more than thirty years, Spagna had never before heard of this event. She set out to discover exactly what happened and why.

Consulting historians, archaeologists, Indigenous elders, and even a grave dowser, Spagna uncovers three possible versions of the event: Native people as perpetrators. White people as perpetrators. It didn't happen at all. Pushed: Miners, a Merchant, and (Maybe) a Massacre replaces convenient narratives of the American West with nuance and complexity, revealing the danger in forgetting or remembering atrocities when history is murky and asking what allegiance to a place requires.

Ana Maria Spagna is the author of nine books including the young adult novel The Luckiest Scar on Earth and most recently the poetry chapbook Mile Marker Six. Her work has been recognized by the River Teeth Literary Nonfiction Prize, the Society for Environmental Journalists, the Nautilus Book Awards, and as a four-time finalist for the Washington State Book Award. A former backcountry trails worker, Ana Maria now teaches in MFA programs at Antioch University, Los Angeles, and Western Colorado University. She lives in Stehekin, Washington.

Finding Your Voice: A Writing Workshop with Ricardo Ruiz - Encuentra tu voz: Un taller de escritura con Ricardo Ruiz

5:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Moses Lake Library
Study Area

Poet Ricardo Ruiz will be teaching a workshop entitled Finding your Voice, how the practice of mindfulness and poetry can help a person discover their voice.

The purpose of the workshop is to introduce poetry and its ability to connect one's inner and outer self. What we hope to achieve is to begin the process by sitting in a quiet space for a brief amount of time and to have one poem written and revised at the end of the session.

Bio

Ricardo Ruiz is a multi-dimensional writer of poetry and prose, father, and combat veteran.

The son of potato factory workers, Ricardo hails from Othello, Washington and his works often draw from his experience as a first-generation Mexican-American. He is passionate about elevating the marginalized voices from rural communities and takes pride in being a conduit for cultural connection. His own struggles straddling cultures provide insight to the difficulties of the Mexican migrant worker and their families.

Ricardo holds a Associates Degree in Business and Accounting from Big Bend Community College where he was recognized as Student of the year in both Business and Economics and English Composition. He also holds a Bachelors of Art in English: Creative Writing from the University of Washington and is an Army Veteran. While in the military Ricardo was recognized as Distinguished Honor Graduate and Distinguished Leader during his Advanced Leadership Course.
