Smoke-Ready Communities

5:30 PM - 6:30 PM

Event Details

Hear from Liz Walker, PhD, of Clean Air Methow to learn practical information about the health risks of wildfire smoke and resources for building "smoke-ready communities." Liz will introduce The Fifth Season, an interpretive exhibit that will be installed at the library this summer.

The beautiful place we live in depends on fire to maintain healthy, robust ecosystems. However, that relationship has been perturbed by post-colonial human development, forest management practices, and a disrupted climate. Continuing to live healthfully and safely in the Methow will require humans to shift many behaviors, including preparations to cope with prolonged smoke episodes. Making these preparations is more accessible to some than others, but the work of ensuring a thriving community and future belongs to all of us. Learn practical information about the health risks of smoke, who is most vulnerable, ways to reduce exposure, and local programs and resources to build "smoke-ready communities."

Liz Walker, PhD, is a mother of two, toxicologist, risk communicator, and mountain runner who has spent her career managing complex collaborations of public health stakeholders. Her work in the Methow and Okanogan has focused on characterizing the impacts of PM2/5 (smoke) exposure on rural communities, and developing and evaluating resiliency strategies and interventions to inform public health policy and communications.
