Adult STEM: Extra No-wax Batik kits

If you missed our Batik class, you can still grab a kit. There will be no live instructions. Registration will be open, first come first serve until the kits are gone.

How do participate:

Register on the NCW Events Calendar
Pick up your kit from your local library 1 week after you register
Do the pre-work 24 hours before dying so the glue can dry.

24 hours after you do your pre-work (once the glue dries), watch the No-wax Batiking with Buffy video. Video can be found on YouTube by typing NCW Libraries No Wax Batiking into the search bar. Please watch the entire video.

List of materials and instructions

- 100% Cotton fabric (We used flour sack dish towels.)

- Plastic bag

- Washable glue either the white or gel (the gel is easier to see on white fabric as it has a slight blue tint, but is a little more difficult to wash out.)

- Urea

- Soda Ash

- procion dye Procion Dye (color of your choosing)

- Foam brushes

1.Pretreat your fabric with soda ash. 1/2 cup of the soda ash to 3 gallons of water. Soak the fabric for about 20 minutes until fully saturated. Let dry. I wring mine out and either line dry or run it through the drain cycle on my wash machine and then hang dry.

2. Create your pattern in glue on your fabric. Let dry.

3. Mix your dyes. 1 Tablespoon of urea dissolved in 2 cups of warm water. Add 3 tablespoons of powdered procion dye. Stir until dissolved.

4. On a protected surface lay out an old towel. Place your dried cotton fabric on top and using the foam brushes apply the dye in various patterns to both sides of the fabric.

5. Roll up and place inside of a plastic bag. Close up the bag and let sit overnight.

6. Wash out the dye and glue. Let dry and enjoy!
