Becoming a Conscious Consumer: The high cost of cheap stuff and how to be a better buyer.

A conscious consumer knows that what we buy has a big effect on our personal health, the environment, society, and the economy. This presentation will help identify ways to make more responsible purchases. Jana will cover the ethical problem of all the cheap stuff that we buy, including global environmental and societal implications. That gets depressing, so then we'll talk about solutions!

First, how to buy less. And then, how to buy smarter in four main categories: clothes, groceries, everyday household goods, and electronics. We'll also briefly touch on the issues of personal health, greenwashing, and advocating for manufacturers to take responsibility for the environmental cost of their products.

Jana Fischback is the Executive Director of Sustainable Wenatchee, a nonprofit that promotes a culture of environmental stewardship and social sustainability in the Wenatchee valley. She's a Wenatchee native and earned her Master's in Environmental Studies from Evergreen State College. She worked as a Sustainability Coordinator on the west side before returning to the valley in 2016. She co-founded Sustainable Wenatchee a year later. She is passionate about showing how social justice and economic sustainability are both intricately tied to environmental issues.
